Visitors are invited to visit the heritage gardens, grounds, orchard and the Visitor Centre of Bellevue House, there will be outside interpretation activities. Unfortunately, Bellevue House itself will not be accessible to the public due to ongoing restoration.
Built to house the wealthy and powerful of Canada’s first capital, Bellevue House represents the 1840s colonial system of class and privilege. This is where Parks Canada tells the full scope of Sir John A. Macdonald’s story. Parks Canada has been working with Indigenous groups, stakeholders and other experts to ensure that we present Macdonald, and the impacts of the decisions taken and institutions created under his leadership, from the perspective of many voices. The renewal of the visitor experience at Bellevue House is a continuing process and the historic home remains closed for the renewal of exhibits. However, even as we make changes, our commitment for your visit to convey Macdonald’s complex legacy and offer a place where Canadians can gain a greater understanding of Canada’s history, including aspects that have caused enduring harm.
