Midsummer's Eve Celebration in Douglas Fluhrer Park

A community Celebration of the Summer Solstice Acrobats / Stilt Walkers / Giant Puppets / Music / Revelry Calliope Collective invites you to participate in a community Summer Solstice gathering on the traditional territories of the Anishinaabe, Haudenosaunee, and Huron-Wendat in Douglas Fluhrer Park at the North end of Wellington St. in downtown Kingston. Enjoy a magical evening with wanderers, musical minstrels, puppets, creatures and more as you're transported to a world of enchantment as Calliope creates a safe and sacred space to re-examine our relationship to the land through community gathering, story-telling, dance, and circus arts in honour of old traditions which prepared folks for the first day of Summer. Our mighty Oak King is at his strongest - the land is lush, green, and full of the harvest. Revel with us in his day of celebration as his funeral pyre is prepared. We embrace Summer's warmth and bask in the season of outdoor frolicking as Holly begins to regain his strength... but that isn't the only story Calliope is telling this year! The characters in Midsummer's Eve are inspired by many different mythologies, and customs and perceptions around the earth... Join us at water's edge to gather with family, friends, and neighbours - both old and new - to celebrate the height of Summer with a brand new story! Dress up (as always) is encouraged. Please bring your own lawn chairs and blankets, enjoy a cup of cider (thanks to Tara Natural Foods) and strawberries in honour of the Strawberry/Honey Moon, and prepare to watch (and become) part of the festivities! Watch this page in the week leading up to the show to meet this season's characters, and join us on June 20th -- a show for Community, by Community that is not to be missed! We want to let you know, Calliope's Summer Solstice celebration in 2020 will not happen in this capacity! Calliope's 2019 Midsummer Solstice Celebration has been made possible thanks to funding from The City of Kingston Arts Fund & Kingston Arts Council, the Ballytobin Foundation, and the generosity of our community, and its independent businesses. Visit us online at www.calliopecollective.com for more details on our Solstice celebratory events, workshops, and performance opportunities!
