Planting Hops Workshop

Leader - Samantha Jordan-Powell, Hop Yard Manager, MacKinnon Brothers Brewing Co Participants will:
  • Gain a basic knowledge of the hop plant, learn how to set up a trellis system, to prepare the soil, and to be able to plant and successfully grow hop bines.
  • Understand the need for replacing the extraordinary amount of water and nutrients they need within the growing season.
  • Learn what pests and diseases to look out for throughout the year that may affect the plant.
  • Have a hands-on experience planting a few rhizomes
Participants may arrange with the instructor to purchase more hop rhizomes for their own use. There will be some information about annual maintenance and harvesting. Check back for the follow-up Harvesting Hops workshop, to be held in the fall. This will be awesome for home brewers interested in learning how to grow their own hops, as well as anyone who has difficulty sleeping. Hops are a great sleep aid if put in your pillow case with lavender. The cost for the workshop is $30/person Catch the 12:30 ferry from Millhaven (please arrive early, the boat can be busy).
